International crisis management study

How are affected companies managing the crisis?

Companies in crisis situations are faced with distinct challenges. These call for targeted, prompt decisions and consistent action. But what are the right decisions and actions that need to be taken to overcome the crisis?

In this study 557 European and Chinese managers provided information on the extent to which they are affected by the current crisis, what measures they are taking as a result and what the factors for successful crisis management are.

Contents of the survey

  • Management summary - What are the key findings of the study?
  • Study participants - Which companies are participating?
  • Estimates - What effect is the crisis having?
  • Crisis management - What measures are being taken? Where is there a need for more action?
  • Comparison - How are profitable companies different to unprofitable ones?
  • Summary - What should be done now?

Statements of businessmen

"This is the most severe economic crisis since the Second World War, with almost all countries and sectors affected. The extent and speed has surprised everyone."
Carl Elsener . Managing Partner . Victorinox AG . Ibach-Schwyz

"The timing of the economic crisis was less surprising than its extent. The global dimension of the crisis means that Europe will not reach the level of 2008 again until 2012 at the earliest."
Nikolaus Gräf . Managing Director . Dunkermotoren GmbH . Bonndorf

"Simple and efficient processes and well-trained and flexible staff are very important in a crisis situation if the necessary, practical adaptations are to be realised with the speed required."
Rainhard Fauser . Managing Director . Weißer + Grießhaber GmbH . Mönchweiler

"The decisive factor in difficult economic times is not a large number of measures, but a focus on a few measures that are implemented rapidly and efficiently. In this it is especially important to communicate in an open, transparent and justifiable manner, both internally and externally. Only then is it possible to avoid rumours and assumptions and create understanding for necessary measures."
Horst W. Garbrecht . CEO . METABO AG . Nürtingen

"An economically difficult environment requires the consistent implementation of measures that achieve positive results quickly and are sustainable. Difficult times enable a company to focus more on its core business, concentrate on customers and implement the changes necessary for a successful future."
Matthias Altendorf . Managing Director. Endress + Hauser GmbH + Co.KG . Maulburg

"Times of crisis offer opportunities for positive change and further development within a company. Enthusiastic leadership, active steps and coaching and training of employees are required in particular."
Roman Löw . Plant Manager . GRIWE Innovative Umformtechnik GmbH . Westerburg
